Coming out June 6th, 2023, Diablo IV is the first release in the iconic demon slaying series in over a decade. In this dark and moody 4th installment, you’ll be returning to hell to deal with Lilith, a demon who wants only the worst for the world.

A lot has changed since the last game came out, and the developers have finally revealed a bit more about the game. Here’s what we know about Diablo 4, and what we can expect from gameplay when it is finally released.

Huge Changes in Gameplay

The Diablo series has always been a PC game first and foremost. Each game was designed for the computer, with Diablo III being the first port to a different console. Diablo IV is setting itself up to be different with the first game ever to be designed for console as well as PC.

On top of this, the game can be played with other people across platforms, so even if you have a PC and your friend has a gaming station, you can still play with each other.

Other big changes include a more open world format, with lots to explore and a huge new character creation section that will allow you to customize your character in a variety of ways. There’s also a big change in the color scheme. Diablo III got some flack from reviewers because it had a bright and cheerful color palette. The developers have gone back to a darker and moodier color scheme for this gaming experience.

Old Favorites Still in Place

There’s a reason why the Diablo series has been popular for decades. The favorite aspects of the game are still very much there. There’s a lavish skill tree that allows players to shape their character in the fighting style of their choice. There’s still hoards of mobs to finish off, in a variety of sizes. At one point you’ll be trying to attack a dozen mobs at once, other times its just one huge monster that needs to be taken down.

Attacks feel natural and smooth during gameplay and fighting sequences have even been improved. There’s now an evade skill that lets you dodge attacks.

Internet Access Required

Among all the changes to modernize Diablo are a few that may be less desirable to some players. The game requires internet access to play and is online only—even when you’re playing single player. On top of this, the developers have added microtransactions to the game.

Fortunately, the micro-transactions are for cosmetics only, but it is still a big change for what used to be a traditional game.

Overall, Diablo IV is heading in a good direction. The developers have gone back to their roots, taking the old but well-loved parts of the Diablo series and modernizing them. The result is a game that looks and feels like a Diablo game should, but with all the fun aspects of a modern game.

If you liked the Diablo series in the past, you’ll probably love this game.
