Ghost Song

The sci-fi metroid genre is reaching a new level. November 2022 saw the release of Ghost Song, a long-running game that has been in development for almost 10 years. Old Moon Studios is responsible for the game's creation. And publisher Humble Games is engaged in the production. The game is available for PC and consoles Nintendo Switch, Xbox One/X/S and PlayStation 4/5.

Fantastic Adventure

The action of the platformer is set in the distant future. The main character is Deadsuit. He is an intelligent, armed spacesuit who suffers from memory loss. He awakens from his sleep on a desert moon and tries to reconstruct the chain of events. However, the satellite is not as abandoned as it might at first seem. It is inhabited by strange space creatures and bloodthirsty robots. And beneath the surface of the moon are numerous tunnels and caves inhabited by horrible monsters.

Deadsuit tries to explore his surroundings and encounters various creatures. Some of them are intelligent. Other monsters act through instincts and reflexes. The protagonist has to solve the mystery of his origin. But not the fact that he will be happy when he learns the whole truth.

Explore a fascinating world

Ghost Song's gameplay is built around exploring numerous levels and locations. Some of them are on the surface of the moon and feature desolate open spaces in a bleak and frightening setting. But the real horror begins when the protagonist descends into the bowels of the satellite. Caves and voids beneath the surface hide terrifying monsters, unusual intelligent creatures, and large numbers of luminescent plants.

At first glance, the desert moon of Loriana is populated by a variety of living organisms, metal shells, and other creatures. Not all of them are aggressive. And with some of them you'll be able to talk to them and learn the details of what's happening on the satellite.

Fight and pump up the hero

A special place in a two-dimensional platformer is occupied by the battles and fights. They are an integral part of the gameplay in Ghost Song. The protagonist gets the opportunity to fight with enemies both in close combat and at a distance. Deadsuit upgrades and improves his space suit as he progresses and uses a variety of weapons, from a blaster to a massive hammer.

Both types of attacks are interconnected. When using the blaster, energy is accumulated, which enhances the damage in close combat. Additionally, special modules and enhancements are installed to the suit, thanks to which the main character gets new skills and becomes more powerful, faster and more enduring.

Advantages and Disadvantages

Ghost Song is reminiscent of Axiom Verge and other metroidvania in fantasy settings. The undoubted pluses of the game were:

• An interesting storyline
• The variety of the surrounding world
• Great number of characters
• Exciting combat component

Of the drawbacks, the monotonous color scheme is worth mentioning. However, this is more of a feature of the genre than an obvious disadvantage.
