Last year, Interactive Magic produced the first major F22 simulation: iF-22. The sim was noted for its dynamic campaigns and stealth capability. Now, a much-improved but not perfect version is on the shelves: iF-22 Persian Gulf Version 5.0.
The differences over the original iF-22 are: Persian Gulf campaign theater, virtual cockpit, solutions to minor bugs, improved terrain, translucent smoke in the 3D accelerated version, compression (less disk space required for install), AGP support, minor improvements in avionics, better wingman intelligence, new in-game sequences (parachute, crash, collision, explosion), more detailed plane models, improved mission planning with more zoom levels, revised manual, and new video cutscenes.
Of these improvements, the single most valuable is the addition of the Persian Gulf to the Ukraine and Bosnia campaign theaters. In an age where the scripted mission is (hopefully) passing into history, generating a unique mission each time always adds an element of suspense. Even DID's award-winning, arguably the top-line F22 sim, lacks a dynamic campaign engine.
Some negatives are still apparent in iF-22 Persian Gulf: load time, below average AI, choppiness (especially at low altitudes) and other minor annoyances.
Considering a flight sim market crowded with America's most advanced fighter, a little research before purchase will likely land you a more satisfying sim. But if you own the original game and tend to favor it over other F22 sims, you will want to strongly consider adding iF-22 Persian Gulf to your personal flight sim air force, especially since Interactive Magic offers a $20 rebate for owners of the original game.
