Mario Party: The Top 100 is a collection of mini games from across the game franchise. This compilation takes 100 of the best mini games from the franchise and brings them all under one title. If you really enjoy this series and are looking for a solid dose of nostalgia, this game brings it all back.

Multiple ways to play

Mario Party: The Top 100 allows you to pick any game you want and play it if you like, but it also lets you look at the game through a presentation style method. In this mode you’ll be sent to an island and have to progress through all the mini games, one game at a time.

There’s also a timed style event called Championship Battles, and a score-based event called the Decathlon. Most of these modes can be played with up to 4 others to help add to the fun—but they’ll have to be local friends. There’s no online aspect to this game.

Unlockable content

Although you can play games individually, many of them have to be unlocked before you can indulge in them. This gives you a reason to play some of the other modes, instead of just skipping around to your favorites. All you have to do to progress through the main mode is to clear the game once anyway, which isn’t terribly difficult for most of the games.

Revamps on some games

On top of the joy of getting to play mini games, some of the games have been freshened up. As an example, games from Nintendo 64 like Mario Party have gotten a facelift in terms of graphics, while games like Crank and Rank from Mario Party 8 have been fixed so that they are less frustrating to play. You’ll find these touch ups through most of the games.

Very quick playthrough

Although 100 mini games seems like a vast amount of content, it actually isn’t all that much. You can play through all 100 mini games in about 2-3 hours, and there’s not a lot of reason to go back to play them again.

Mario Party: The Top 100 could really have been improved by going back to its roots. The original Mario Party that so many of the mini games came from had a board game style that helped slow players down and enjoy the process more. Although some people felt frustrated by the board game, it turns out that this might actually be a necessary part of the game. Mario Party: The Top 100 could have benefited in having it.

This game has a lot of nostalgia to it, and getting your hands on these games one more time does feel good. Unfortunately, these features are balanced by the fact that it’s easy to rush through this game and not have any reason to pick it up again. If you need a quick game, this one is great, but if you’re looking for long term play value this may not hold your interest.

Pros:

  • Strong nostalgia factor
  • Perfect weekend warrior game
  • Fun to play with friends

Cons:

  • Very little replay value
