One of the most interesting things about horror games is that they actually end up being more fun than they are scary most of the time. The key to making horror games frightening isn't in any sort of graphic violence or gore; it's in building an atmosphere where you feel like something evil could be lurking just around the corner at any moment. However, sometimes they might just actually want to make a fun horror game. And that's where titles like Mimicry, developed by Euphoria Games, come into the scene. But what is this game all about? How do you make a horror game that's centered on having some fun? Well, let's talk about it!
About the game
As we mentioned before, Mimicry is not your average horror game, it is actually quite hard to classify it as a horror game even. It is a multiplayer survival game, in which you get into matches with 8 other players. The twist here is that one of the players will be infected by a horrifying alien creature, much like in the movie The Thing.
Once the player is infected with the alien virus you're it's going to have to eliminate all the other players. To do something like that, the infected player will be able to transform into any of the other players, whether alive or dead. Using this ability they'll be able to deceive other players and eliminate them one by one.
As a none infected player, your role is to try and escape the area once another player is infected so that you can reach the last safe zone. Keep in mind that even if you get killed as a non-infected player, as long as one of the survivors makes it out alive, your team pretty much wins.
A classic idea
This is pretty fun, and it's actually quite common, and probably one of the first, or at least the most popular ones is the movie The Thing. But there is a more recent game example that follows precisely the same plot and concept as the thing and by expansion the same plot as Mimicry. You've probably already guessed it by now, we are talking about Among Us of course. These two games offer the exact same basic experience, but each has its own unique features.
As you can see, what would make this game a horror game is actually more related to the visuals and the entire game's art direction and design. It's really hard to consider Amon Us a horror game, even if it can be quite a thrilling experience. Mimicry is also hard to consider a pure horror game. In fact, it is more similar to a game such as Left 4 Dead, except without zombies, of course.
Mimicry is not a common horror game, and it is in fact hardly a horror game at all. As for the gameplay itself, it is very similar to Left 4 Dead, although it focuses a lot more on strategy and teamwork rather than shooting. If you want to play a horror game that's more fun than scary, then you should give Mimicry a try.
