Mundaun

If you like horror games then Mundaun is a must play, it is as simple as that. I have been keeping a close eye on this game for a while now and I have to say that it is one of the most interesting and unique horror games that I have had the pleasure to check out in quite some time. It is like a work of art, well a work of art that will give you an unsettling feeling and scare the hell out of you. It is a fantastic adventure and puzzle game with some RPG like elements sprinkled on top for good measure.

Heading To The Alps

Mundaun is a game that is very story driven. Our hero is making his way to the titular village which is situated in the Alps. His grandfather has passed away in very mysterious circumstances and we are going there to find out what really happened. There is a real twisted mystery here as you learn about the people that live here and the horrors of what is really going on. The whole thing is very “dreamy” and unnerving and it keeps pushing you forward to discover what is going on here.

By Hand

What grabs your attention with Mundaun is the incredible visuals. All of the visuals were drawn by hand before they were put into the game. The way it is all grey gives it a rather creepy look and I just love the whole style of the game. The Alps are a truly beautiful part of the world, but having them in this dark and grey style makes them far more unnerving and creepier. Also, there is a dream/nightmare vibe going on here that is very cool, but I do not want to go into details on that as it will lead to spoilers!

Forget Everything And Run!

The gameplay of Mundaun is quite interesting. You have this log cabin that serves as your hub where you can make coffee, look at the art you have collected and get your bearings. There are three large areas to the game and you will be exploring them, solving puzzles, finding items, and so on in the first person. The most interesting aspect of the gameplay is the fear factor… and I am not talking about the TV show. Rather than having a life bar, it is fear that we have to watch for. How shaky your hand is, is the indication of how scared you are, you will also move slower if you are in a more intense state of fear too. It is kind of hard to explain, but it all works really well.

Pros:

• The game has a very unique hand drawn art style
• I found the story of the game to be great
• The way it deals with “fear” is very interesting
• It is the kind of game you will want to beat in just a couple of sittings

Cons:

• I am not sure it is the kind of game I would play through over and over again
• It will take you about 6 to 8 hours to see all that it has
