No matter if you call it Obscure The Aftermath or Obscure II, this is a pretty decent horror/survival game that back in 2008 when it was released I was pretty surprised that we got it. The previous game had come out like four years earlier, not exactly set the world on fire, and by the time this came out we had the PS3 and Xbox 360, yet this game was still made for the PS2 and the PSP, although they did make a Nintendo Wii version as well.

High School Never Ends

I have to start by saying the first Obscure really clicked with me. It was kind of like The Faculty or Scream in that it was a teen horror movie and it had multiple characters, different endings, and a rather interesting story all around. With Obscure The Aftermath they have decided that only three of the characters from the original game, Shannon, Stan and Kenny survived.

They introduce a bunch of new characters, but it is kind of lame they just made a decision about what the “real” ending of the last game was. The story has moved on a few years and now takes place in a college town. Once again there is a strange flower and once again it is turning people into monsters. Honestly, the plot this time around is full of cliches and just not as good as the first game. It is not horrible, but it lacks that little something that made the first game so special.

Feeling Real Emotion

One thing I have to give Obscure The Aftermath a ton of credit for is the presentation. The first game looked good, had a great soundtrack, and offered impressive voice acting. Obscure II is even better in this regard. The voice cast here does a great job and actually helps sell the rather weak plot way better than you would think. It also has a very fitting college rock kind of soundtrack too.

For a later PS2 game, this also looks great. When it comes to the PS2 and in terms of visuals I would say this is one of the more unsung games. It is a damn shame they did not release this on PS3 or 360 with an HD upgrade. The only downside to the presentation is the monster/creature designs. They feel way too Silent Hill inspired for my liking and are more like twisted versions of what a person was than just a straight up monster.

It Is Dangerous To Go Alone

The gameplay of the first game was not amazing, but I feel the story and characters, plus the multiple endings made it better. With Obscure The Aftermath what we have here is not a bad game, but there are a few issues. It has a random nature to it where the AI will randomly decide where items are and what items you will get in any given area. This does keep you on your toes and I do like the idea of it. In the first game, if a character died you kept on playing, but you got a different ending.

Here is a character dies, it is game over! Also, when the AI is controlling a companion, they are way to trigger happy! It is very frustrating to see them blow through a bunch of ammo as ammo is scarce. When you play with a friend, Obscure II becomes a much more fun and compelling game, that is the best way to experience it.

7.5

I would not say that Obscure The Aftermath is a bad game, it just does not live up to what the first game offered. I think they had some decent ideas here, but the whole thing just feels like a cheap sequel. It is like the original Obscure was a decently funded movie that was intended for a theatrical release. Obscure II on the other hand feels like a movie that was made by a different team who feel like they know what made the first one special, but ultimately did not. I liked revisiting some of the characters from the first game, but I was left wanting more.

Pros:

  • Playing this in co-op with a friend is a pretty fun experience
  • This is a very impressive game when it comes to the visuals
  • It has some very well-done voice acting
  • I enjoyed the soundtrack

Cons:

  • The game just lacks what made the first game special.
  • It lacks the multiple endings of the first game too
