Obi-Wan Kenobi is one of the most popular characters in the entire galaxy, so it would make sense that there would be an entire game based on his adventures. In this third-person action game, players control the powerful Jedi knight as they journey through 15 different levels, slashing enemies with their lightsaber while proving his skill to the Jedi Council. Telling an original story set before the popular films, Star Wars: Obi-Wan is a spin-off with some interesting lore and engaging action.

Main Game Features

  • Control one of the most powerful Jedis ever
  • Defeat enemies with lightsabers and more
  • Take on your friends in 1-on-1 duels

Story

Set before the events of Star Wars Episode 1: The Phantom Menace, this game tells the story of Obi-Wan Kenobi when he was learning the ropes as a Jedi Padawan. Eager to prove his ability to the Jedi Council, Obi-Wan takes up a special mission from Mace Windu, who tasks him with investigating a disturbance in the city of Coruscant. After being attacked by a criminal gang called the Black Heth, Obi-Wan must rescue an informant and stop them before the Black Heth dominates the city. Eventually, the story catches up with the plot of the first movie, letting players experience classic characters like Jar-Jar Binks and other memorable moments.

For fans of the Star Wars prequels, this game is an interesting way to see the origin story of one of their favorite characters. As an added bonus, you also get to experience an interactive version of the first movie, obviously played from the perspective of Obi-Wan. The story takes you to classic planets like Tatooine, while you meet up with characters like Queen Amidala and more. While it won't completely change the way you look at the franchise, Star Wars: Obi-Wan is an entertaining support story with plenty of cool moments.

Gameplay

As expected, Star Wars: Obi-Wan lets you take control of Obi-Wan Kenobi, wielding a lightsaber and taking on a variety of enemies in over a dozen different levels. In addition to your trusty lightsaber, you can also use blasters and grenades, as well as turrets to defeat every bad guy in sight. You can also use a variety of force powers, letting you jump higher, manipulate objects, and even slow down time. These force powers are primarily used in combat, but are also required to bypass environmental puzzles and progress past obstacles. Instead of massive battles like those seen in Star Wars: Battlefront, Star Wars: Obi-Wan offers more intimate fights, where you only have your skills to rely on.

Although there aren't any cooperative modes, you can engage in competitive multiplayer offline with one other friend. If you have a pal who's up to the challenge, two players can face off in Jedi Battle mode, where you'll test your skills in a duel to the death. There are various characters to choose from, and more can be unlocked within the solo Jedi Arena challenge mode, playable between main missions. While the offerings are shallow and you'll likely grow bored after a few matches, it's still a nice inclusion for group play.

Conclusion

Star Wars: Obi-Wan isn't the best game based on Star Wars, but it's serviceable and still fun to play. As the character becomes more and more popular, we hope to see a flashy remake of this underrated game one day. The controls can be stiff and the levels are notably basic, but if you love Star Wars, you probably won't mind.
