Vampires are supposed to be horrible blood sucking creatures, but what if you decide you want to change? In Voltaire: The Vegan Vampire, the main character Voltaire has decided to give up on being a vampire and turn to eating plants instead.
Unfortunately, his family disagrees with this choice. Rather than letting him live alone in the forest the way he wants to, they send hoards of minions in to attack each night. In order to live peacefully as a vegan vampire, you must find ways to defend your plants from these hoards, as well as find time for basic survival skills.
Cute Cartoon Horror
Most horror games have a dark, moody atmosphere. If it’s not done in dull shades of grey and purple, it’s often very close. A few horror games have added a cartoon look to their work, but few pull it off. The cartoons are extremely cute, with bright colors, and picturesque backgrounds. It’s sometimes so cute, it’s hard to believe you’re about to be torn apart by wicked minions.
Survival Horror at its Finest
Despite the cute appearance, staying alive in this game is a lot of work. According to the storyline, you’ve been helped by your uncles to try and live off the land. They act as a sort of tutorial to get you started, clearing fields to put your crops in, and preparing for night when the bad guys come. At night, there are only 4 gaps in your home where monsters can come in, and they all go by your crops. It turns out, your crops have the ability to help you defend them.
If you’ve ever played Plants vs. Zombies, you won’t miss the similarities here. Just like in that game, you’ll be using plants to defend your home, and if the minions get past the plants its game over.
You can upgrade plants during the day to help you prepare at night, but a certain amount of management skill is needed. Everything you do in the game costs you hunger, and you’ll have to think about and prepare for ways to address that hunger.
Fortunately, doing things like watering the plants can help, so it’s just a matter of being crafty with your work.
Cute Story
Just like the graphics, the story line is pretty cute. Even though Voltaire is a vampire, it’s pretty easy to feel sympathetic to his cause. The story is well developed and keeps gameplay enjoyable as you go through day to day life.
If you enjoyed Plants vs. Zombies, you’ll probably enjoy this cute survival horror. It’s got whimsical graphics, an entertaining storyline, and gameplay that will challenge your brain. The game offers management strategy, as well as mild combat.
As an added benefit, the game can be played locally with multiple players, and also offers the ability to play both with controllers and keyboard and mouse. The flexibility of this game is refreshing, as well as its unique look and feel.
