Remasters have been in vogue for the last decade in gaming. We have seen games from our childhood given the old spit shine and games that underperformed initially given a second shot. However, it’s a very rare sight to see a retro title from the 80’s or 90’s pop up again and if they do, they need to be a well-established brand or IP. So, when we heard news that Alex Kidd was making his way back onto our screens, we were pleasantly surprised. Modern consoles are about to be graced with a re-imagining of Alex Kidd In Miracle World DX and we can’t wait to see what this one has in store.

This game plays like 2D scrolling arcade titles such as Super Mario Bros, Crash Bandicoot, Celeste, LittleBigPlanet, Super Meat Boy and Rayman Legends to name a few. This remaster aims to bring Alex Kidd to a new generation of gamer and modernise the retro gaming of this 80’s smash hit. However, is this game as good as it always was, or is this a stretch to far for the old dog? We find out in our preview of Alex Kidd In Miracle World DX.

A Re-Masterclass

Firstly, lets take a look at how the game look blocky pixels and transformed this game into a modern looking title. In terms of the graphical detail on show here, this is on par with Ori and the Will of the Wisps or the modern-day Super Mario Bros titles. The animations, vibrant colour palette, recognisable character models and stunning environments all culminate to offer a beautifully fresh yet equally nostalgic adventure which returning players and a new generation of gamers will love in equal measure. Then with regards to the gameplay, the remaster takes the rather happy go lucky nature of the original and adds more intensity and pace to the action. Players will bound through levels fast, dealing with obstacles, intricate platforming, a handful of enemies and of course, the bosses that were presented to us all those years ago. The game retains enough of its old self to remain recognisable but improves in every aspects that it can without losing that personality.

Then in terms of new content, there is plenty to go around. For the most part, the story, levels and action is the same. However, the game includes new enemies, new boss fights and game modes like boss rush that add an extra layer of intrigue to this retro remaster. Then in addition to this, the UI and design overall is much cleaner and more accessible. In short, this game improves in just about every department.

The Verdict

Overall, we think this game is limited from being a blockbuster title due to the fact that technically, this game already exists. However, in terms of catering to a new generation of gamers and providing an improved, more modern experience. This game does this and more. The sound, visuals, gameplay, combat, new content and nostalgic touches are all fantastic.

8.5

So, if you want a healthy dose of retro gaming through the lens of 2021, this one is a must buy.

Pros:

  • A much more modern look and feel
  • Retains most of the charm of the original game
  • New content is excellent and helps the game feel fresh

Cons:

  • Purists will perhaps be upset with the wealth of new content
  • Does cater to a younger audience
