Ary and the Secret of Seasons

Platformer games are not only some of the most popular games among the classics and retro but also are a favorite when it comes to small indie games. And even though some games start small like Hollow Knight, they can end up being huge like Ori and the Blind Forest. However, Ary and the Secret of Seasons stand out from many other indie games for many reasons. Not only thanks to the 3D visuals, but also the art style and the platform availability. And now that the game is available for basically every current console and on PC through Steam, it's about time we check it out. So let's talk about Ary and the Secret of Seasons!

The Plot

The game tells the story of Aryelle, or simply Ary, a young girl who’s eager for a life full of adventures. After all, Ary is the daughter of Gwenn, the guardian of Winter in the kingdom of Valdi. One day Ary has to take on the role of Gwenn and is forced to go on a journey to replace her father in an important meeting of the guardians. However, there are many hardships that a guardian of the stations has to face, and this journey is full of them.

The game

The story in Ary and the Secret of the Seasons is nothing really special, nor is it even the center of the game experience. The journey and the adventure you have in front is the true joy of the game. In this way, it resembles a lot of the feeling of Zelda games, where the plot is basic, but the adventure is what takes the cake.

The gameplay in Ary and The Secret of Seasons is in many ways inspired by classic Zelda games and a little bit of the style of The Legend of Zelda: Wind Waker. The gameplay is similar to many other 3D platformers, with the special element of the Season Orbs and the powers they possess. Once again, almost directly inspired by the classic The Legend of Zelda: Oracle of Seasons. There are many enemies, puzzles, and a world to explore. There's magic in every little detail of Ary and the Secret of Seasons, but does it live up to what promises? Well.

Ary and the Secret of Seasons is a beautiful game, with promising mechanics, great art, fun gameplay, and a nostalgic feeling that fills the air. However, there are way too many technical issues for the player to comfortably enjoy this title.

The game has a lot of glitches and bugs, and it's not really that hard to get stuck because of a technical issue. While the art is beautiful, the graphics aren't all there either, it's one of the weakest elements of the game. And this is especially noticeable when you play on any non-Switch platform.

Sure, in the switch you can reduce the issue by just playing in handheld mode, and thanks to the smaller screen and the lower resolution you won't notice them as badly. But when you're playing this game on a big screen is when the graphical issues really shine out. Not only this, but the view distance is very limited, which means you have a beautiful open world to explore, but it will look foggy if it's just a little away from you. Overall it's a great game, in theory, and the technical elements prevent the player from fully enjoying this otherwise excellent adventure.

Pros

  • Feels like a classic
  • Great art
  • Fun story
  • Lots of exploration
  • Acute journey

Cons

  • Technical issues all over the place
  • Inconsistent graphics
  • Gameplay problems
