VR Gaming didn’t have a great start, and it’s still struggling to stay relevant even nowadays. But since there’s more competition between companies to develop the best VR, prices are going down, and that means it’s more accessible now. But speaking of things that are struggling to survive, The Walking Dead is no stranger to video games either. But unlike Telltale’s The Walking Dead, The Walking Dead Onslaught actually revolves around the main characters from the TV show. So, is this a formula for success, or just another VR game to be forgotten?
What’s this about?
One thing to keep in mind when it comes to making a game based on AMC's The Walking Dead Universe is that they have to make clear what's going on.
They can opt to make an original story with the TV show characters, or make a game that's actually canon for the show. Oddly enough, they opted to make the game canon for the show, so it actually fills some blanks in the plot.
It takes place between season 8 and season 9, and the game doesn't even get you into any context for what's going on in the story. You have to be up to at least that point in the show so you can start to understand what's going on in the game. You start the game playing as Daryl, and you seem to be chasing or trying to find someone. This chase could put Daryl in danger, and he ends up with a bad wound on his leg, which could affect Alexandria's stability. Rick is not happy about this, and much of the game's plot goes around the rivaling relationship between Daryl and Rick.
Believe it or not, this is not the first VR game based on The Walking Dead. In fact, the other TWD VR game available came out earlier this very same year, so that makes two of them in less than twelve months. However, these two are very different from each other, as one of them opts for a more arcade version of a zombie survival apocalypse. While the other one had a lot more strategy elements included and much more realistic mechanics. The Walking Dead: Saints & Sinners wasn't based on the show either, but rather in the general TWD universe.
The gameplay in The Walking Dead Onslaught is more arcade-like, and there's a lot of zombie killing involved. However do keep in mind that this is basically the opposite to Saints & Sinners, whereas you had to take care of weapons breaking and keeping supplies. But there's also a lot of other strategy elements to take care of, in The Walking Dead Onslaught you won't have to worry about that. Action is the center of the biggest part of the gameplay here, so if that's what you're looking for, then this one's for you.
This game feels a lot like watching the show, but mostly the bad parts of the show. Of course, this is only when the game tries to do some story progression or plot development. It really does feel like you're watching filler episodes of the show, and thanks to the real characters being involved it works out nicely. However, we only get to see four characters throughout the game, and the plot doesn't ever advance. They keep talking about something that'll happen but nothing really happens.
- Fun to play
- A lot of zombie killing
- Resembles the narrative of the show
- The plot is too boring
- Not much to see here
- It can get boring fast
