Alright, prepare your body for Beasties by rokaplay. This bizarre game appears to be a strange amalgamation of a few different game genres that we can only hope works like they say it does. Colorful and cute, Beasties is a community developed game with lots of interesting gameplay options that have been and will continue to be introduced. Let’s jump in and take a look.
So, as I said earlier, there are a few very different styles of gameplay in this title. You’ve got some Bejeweled 2 inspiration, a little bit of Pokémon and a healthy dose of Farmville in the mix as well. It appears that the majority of the gameplay involves a turb-based match-3 combat system, as though you’re using your Candy Crush powers to win dogfights with strange animals.
Aside from the combat, there also seems to be some kind of farming mechanic where you grow and sell plant-based items to boost your ‘Beasties’ abilities or to sell on to a ‘crops market.’ If it works anywhere close to like they claim it does, it could provide a very interesting and unique mode of gameplay that we’ve not really seen before.
The art style is, how you say, “Bouncy.” Everything has that rubbery sheen on it and it all kind of bounces like its part of an old hosepipe animated pre-movie warning video. All hyper expressive and high definition, not something I’m having a go at but games produced by indie companies that have such a high level of polish often fall into a trap of having very little actual gameplay. I’m sure that this isn’t one of those cases as they are crowd funded and supported.
The thing that gives me the most amount of hope for games like this is its community driven development. They are accepting help from anyone who wants to help. Pitch Beatie ideas, side quests, items, features and locations, anything that will help them reach a fully fleshed out game with loads to do.
They appear to be listening to what others are saying, taking the feedback on and making necessary changes. This provides them with a considerable amount of valuable information, very early on in the creation process, lining it up to be a fantastically hyped game that could deliver a lot. Again, this is only speculation, but a guy can hope.
There could be a lot to love about this game. It’s just a matter of the developers taking the time to put everything they learn from the community support into the game and making it all work properly.
I’m very excited to see what kind of game this becomes as it has a lot of the makings to become low-key viral.
- Very clean and high-definition art style
- Lots of gameplay options
- Community supported development
- Could just be flashy with no substance
