Scroll the Pain Away

When I saw the title, Scroll the Pain Away a whole bunch of things came to mind in regards to what this game could be about. I will admit, that a cute, charming, and fun game about magic was not one of the things that I thought this could be. This is the kind of game that is ideal for those of you who love your games to be more relaxing and offer something of a “chill” experience. I can see this one getting a bit of a cult following and I am sure it is going to be one of the better relaxing games of 2024.

Going Her Own Way

The main character in Scroll the Pain Away and the character we play as is a young woman called Indigo. Indigo has been trained in the magical arts and she is at a point in her studies where she has learned all that she can from her master and she now needs to head out into the real world and make it on her own. I never thought about this until just now, but I guess the game does have something of a coming of age story as its backbone and that is something I think is very cool.

A Town Without Magic

While she was learning magic, Indigo always dreamed of having her own potion/magic shop! Scroll the Pain Away sees Indigo set up shop in a quaint little town that does not have any magic. However, the townsfolk here sure do have a lot of problems that could perhaps be made easier with the help of her magic! There is a lot of charm here and the interaction with these townsfolk is where the story comes from. Each one has their own problems and troubles that they need Indigo’s help with and it is up to you to try and help them out. The back and forth is a lot of fun and the writing is witty and has a lot of charm to it. It is the kind of game that will make you smile a lot as you play it.

Mixing And Matching

The way the gameplay of Scroll the Pain Away works is that you have a selection of magical glyphs that you can select. There are 24 of these and while that may not sound like a lot, it is actually the perfect amount. You see, you need to mix and match these glyphs so that you can find new magic spells and so on that can help the people with their problems. Sometimes your magic will fix their problem right up, other times it can have hilarious consequences and cause you to rethink your position as the town's resident magic user! The gameplay is fleshed out a bit thanks to Indigo having a phone. Yes, this is a world of magic, but Indigo still has a phone and she can do all kinds of things with it such as messaging people, playing games and even getting some ideas for her magic shop.

A Real Magical Kind Of Charm

Scroll the Pain Away is the kind of game that is sure to make you smile the more you play it, thanks to the very impressive visuals. It has a cartoon kind of style to it and I love how well-drawn everything in the game is. This is the kind of game that at first glance may not seem like anything special as far as the visuals go, but the magic shop and the various characters that come into it are all designed really well and have a bunch of little details that give them a lot of personality. I know I am guilty of using the word charming a lot, but charming is honestly the best way that I can describe the presentation of the game.

Pros:

• I liked Indigo, she is smart, fun, and cute
• The various townsfolk are all very entertaining
• The writing is charming and witty
• Making magic spells to help people is so much fun

Cons:

• It sometimes feels like you are just pairing random things to try and get the right result
• This may be a bit too slow-paced for some people
