The Callisto Protocol, which was revealed during the 2020 edition of The Game Awards, is a Dead Space sequel in all except name. This next-gen horror exclusive, directed by Glen Schofield, co-creator of Dead Space and founder of Sledgehammer Games, aims to deliver familiar-feeling shocks to Jupiter's moon, Callisto. Schofield's goal is to make "the most horrifying game on next-generation platforms."

Schofield's team has their job cut out for them, with early next-gen horror fare like The Medium already looking interesting. The Callisto Protocol, on the other hand, is loaded with skin-crawling potential, if the gory reveal video is any indication.

Story Explained

The setting for this interplanetary survival horror story is 300 years in the future. This adventure, set in the year 2320, takes place on Callisto, a Jupiter moon that humanity has never visited. The plot centers around terrifying animals and a plot emerging on the moon Callisto's filthy and hazardous Black Iron Prison. So yet, plot specifics are few, with only a teaser and a handful of interviews to rely on. However, we do know that the game will be in third person and will be story-driven.

Bringing Immersion at the forefront

According to a Polygon interview, Schofield was intrigued to utilizing the moon of Callisto because of the location, which is supposed to include an entire ocean locked behind a vast quantity of ice.

Schofield told IGN that "the visuals are really freaking incredible now," and that the 150-plus developer team is hard at work to make this game the scariest title on the current generation of consoles.
