There is no proliferation of games with dinosaurs as main characters. There was a time in the nineties that with the boom of Jurassic Park these saurians were absolute protagonists, but apart from the games based on the trilogy, we haven't seen much of these prehistoric animals in the present lately. That's why when we first heard about TheHunter: Primal, we were excited. It mixed that very survival-mode genre with the indiscriminate hunting of the kings of the past. So, does this game deliver for all the dino fans out there that are eager to get their hands on some Jurassic action? Well, let's talk about it!
About the game
Starting this game, we are pretty much a colonizer that is set to get rid of these dangerous animals on an alien planet to get it ready for human arrival. But who could volunteer for such a dangerous and horrifying mission? Well, you're pretty much condemned for your past crimes, and if you manage to get this mission done, you'll earn your absolution. And even if we fail, or die trying, our descendants will be forced to repeat the same destiny. This doesn't sound like a great deal but they don't leave you a choice.
Upon our arrival on the planet, we are tasked to hunt, localize, and eliminate as many beasts as possible. In doing so we'll also be able to gather resources for our survival. We'll also be able to upgrade the equipment we started with, which isn't saying much since we basically just start with a machete. There are weapons around, we are not the first ones to go on this mission...
Once ready to leave, we can scan dinosaur tracks or droppings and track them. If we wound them it will be much easier to locate their blood, because they will flee at an unreachable speed when wounded. And, if we are persistent, we will achieve our goal.
Even though possibly Jurassic Park is the most popular representation of dinosaurs in the media, we see that most of the time, dinosaurs are used as a horror element. And it does make a lot of sense, just look at those things, they are huge and terrifying, and a lot of them are incredible predators.
Such is the case, that one of the most popular dinosaur-themed video games of all time, Dino Crisis, is a horror game. And we are still getting games like The Lost Wild, that explore all the different ways these ancient creatures can bring shivers to our very bones. theHunter: Primal is also going for a similar take, but does it deliver?
To put it short, it does not deliver, at least not at the moment. But the good news is that the game is in a constant state of update and they are still adding a lot of content, improving the mechanics, and making this a bigger game. Hopefully, at some point, it becomes a great game. As it stands right now it is lackluster and lacks content.
- Huge world
- It has a lot of potential!
- Lack of polish
- A little bit too slow-paced
- Plagued with technical issues
