Within the world of gaming, there has been a real push for accessibility and catering for the casual gamer. Which has meant that less precise gameplay, more hand-holding and easier overall gaming experiences have become common space. However, there are still some games out there that champion hardcore, challenging and punishing gameplay. Whisper Trip is a ninja based game that does exactly that, challenging the player to take on the way of the warrior.
This game plays like other games of this ilk such as Ghostrunner, Ninja Gaiden, Metroid and Katana Zero. This game is a title that offers intriguing combat, striking cyberpunk visuals and promises to offer a storyline worth experiencing. However, is this game a work of art, or does this game fall flat on its face? We find out in our review of Whisper Trip.
The Way of The Warrior
So let’s begin with the gameplay for this title. This game has combat that genuinely tries to make each encounter feel unique. The enemies you encounter are essentially your equal. You wont ever find yourself in a position where any enemy cannot best you. Let your guard down and you’ll be sliced and diced. The combat is fun and fast paced, there are a wide variety of enemy types and as whole, this really helps keep the player engaged from start to end.
Then as for the story, we have to say that the concept is a lot stronger than the narrative offered. You play as a member of the TPF or Tactical Police Force and with a thermal katana in hand, you will have to hunt down the terrorists that lurk within the city. However, aside from this great concept, the game doesn’t expand upon this or deliver on the promise of an excellent story, which is a real shame.
We also have to say that this game doesn’t look the part either. That’s not to say that it looks terrible, as it doesn’t. It’s just that when compared to similar games in similar settings such as Stray, Cyberpunk 2077 or Ghostrunner, this game doesn’t look fantastic. The animations are rough around the edges and the environments all blur into one. So in our opinion at least, it’s not ideal.
Overall, Whisper Trip is a fun ninja game that offers precise, varied combat, a cool world to explore and a series of interesting moments. However, we can’t help but find this one lacklustre overall. The art style is a generic cyberpunk one, the animations are poor and the storyline is lifeless and doesn’t grab the players attention in the slightest.
Luckily this game offers enough great gameplay to warrant a try but if you go into this one expecting Ninja Gaiden perfection, you’ll be very disappointed.
- Fantastic gameplay and combat
