Welcome to Dap, a game that has you running through a hostile and corrupted world filled with terrible dangers that threaten you and your strange little family of ‘Daps.’ Daps are odd ghostlike creatures that follow you around as you attempt to lead them all to safety, but beware as something evil and sinister in the world threatens to either kill or turn your companions into something scary and dangerous. This game unapologetically refuses to explain itself and frequently leaves you with a multitude of questions on who are you, what are you doing and how can you escape from this nightmare? Let’s get into it.
So, this game works kind of like a bullet time game with lots of terrible monsters that you must defend against. As a strange hybrid of The Binding of Isaac and Yomawari: Midnight Shadows, you explore this lush pixelated world and avoid dangers, while keeping your fellow Daps safe and performing a type of resource management.
The odd part is that the resource that you manage are actually the Dap’s themselves. They help you solve puzzles and fight, and the more you have the stronger the group will become. This works as a double-edged sword however, as when the mysterious infection sets in, it can turn your very force against you.
With a game that also permits scavenging and crafting, the survival elements within this title are in their multitude and it really helps keep you grounded in this unique world. Regularly make trips to the surface along your journey so you can rest and tend to a little garden that you have there. This function offers a fantastic break from how frightening the game can be at times.
There is something really special about the ambiance of this game. Gameplay is one thing, but the way this game makes you feel is something else entirely. As though it took a page from games like Sally Face or Lisa, there is something shockingly unsettling about the environment in which your character inhabits. The trees look strange and pixelated, the reflective water covered floor makes for a spooky environment that can show you dangers before they arrive properly on screen. A considerable amount of effort has been made to make you feel a certain way while playing this game and it really works.
Tied intrinsically to the ambiance, this game has a unique yet pleasant aesthetic. Playing the strange little pure white Dap, you are a start contrast from the world, and it makes you feel visible and vulnerable.
The levels here have color switches at points where suddenly there are striking greens, purples and blues that illuminate the world and keep you engaged. The enemies are frightening as a great use of visual ambiguity is present throughout; you can’t always tell what you’re looking at and that is scary as hell.
If you like a game that frightens you as much as it intrigues you then you could do a lot worse than this title. Give it a go and you wont regret it.
