Available on Playstation 4, Windows, Nintendo Switch, macOS, and Xbox One, Ember Knights was released is set for release in the fall of 2021. Developed by Tiny Titan Studios, and published by Asmodee the upcoming game is a rogue-lite title that invites groups of four players to defeat a tyrannical figure set to destroy the world. Bound to hit the market in the Fall of 2021, Ember Knights has to prove its worth to players, especially because it comes from a relatively new and unproven developer.
Legendary Protectors of the Nexus
Ember Knights is a rogue-lite, and similarly to many titles of this generation, it derives greatly from its predecessors. The title mixes the genre up by bringing a new feature into the genre, co-op gameplay. Roguelikes, or Rogue-lites, aren’t typically games associated with multiplayer, until now.
These types of games are gruesome experiences built to challenge and frustrate players and finding three other friends willing to go through hours of that same pain can be a challenge itself. Yet, this might be the greatest feature and selling point of the game.
The Ember Knights, are four legendary warriors that are tasked with defending the Nexus, and the world it protects. As Praxis, the caretaker of the Nexus descends into madness and starts threatening reality itself. Praxis summons legions, and evil armies, through the harnessing of a power that is called the “Great Flame”. The four knights are then, called upon to restore peace. They have to stop Praxis and restore the mythical power of the flame and end the tyrant’s rule.
Four-Way Action
The genre of rogue-lites relies on slow and steady progression. Game sessions are restarted and revert the progression of players in different intensities. Ember Knights might remind players of Hollow Knight, Hades, and Tribes of Midgard, but it inserts the co-op factor into a lonesome genre. Having players cooperate, locally, or online changes the selfishness of the genre, to a coordinated, friendly, and fun experience.
Each and every run tries to be unique, and with different loadouts, weapons, and upgrades it certainly is. Still, the biggest variety might come from the actual playstyles of the squad facing the challenges. The game has a 2D platformer visual, and a colorful world filled with content, weapons, and magic. Each of these weapons and spells is upgradeable and can be customized through load-outs and ancient relics, but most importantly creating synergies between players and build is essential.
Conclusion
The world of Ember Knights shows great promise, a Demo is available online for those curious players and there you can experience over fifty enemies, and action-packed hack-and-slash. The boss fights, scenarios, and design doesn’t make it a one-of-a-kind title, but the addition of co-op gameplay is certainly a fresh twist into an old genre.
