Lamentum is a chilling horror guaranteed to give you nightmares. Despite the 2D pixelated look, the monsters your characters face get more and more horrible as time goes on. This is not a game for the faint of heart, but for those who truly love the horror genre, it is a game that should not be missed.

The game opens with Victor Hartwell, the main character, attempting to find a cure for the disease his beloved Alissa suffers from. An Earl who lives in a haunted mansion claims to have the cure for this disease. When they arrive, however, they learn the cure comes at a dark price. Now Victor must find Alissa and escape the mansion—hopefully alive. This game has a definite classic Lovecraftian feel, so if you’ve ever enjoyed curling up to a tale about Cthulhu, you’ll probably enjoy this game.

Moody Graphics

Pixelated 2D art is often reserved for lighter hearted games. Lamentum chooses to pick up this same art style, but in a completely different way. Although the game starts out with fairly ordinary monsters, they ramp it up as the game goes on. The pixelated graphics actually work to make these monsters somehow more horrible than they originally were.

If you were thinking this was a kiddie-horror game based on the graphics, let’s be very clear this game is not appropriate for minors. While it doesn’t explicitly say so on the game’s main page, its best to keep this away from kids under the age of 13.

Sound is Perfect

The sound for this game is also incredibly well done. The music, especially in the safe room, is very enjoyable. What really makes this game take off though is the sound effects. The sounds are done perfectly and match up to the moment very well. The sound is one of the best parts of the game, so turn it on while playing. It’s worth it.

Retro Gaming Style

Lamentum’s developers openly share that their inspiration comes from early horror games like Resident Evil and Silent Hill. This possibly explains the graphics, but also some of the gaming features. Lamentum’s save function is a throw back to Resident Evil, with ink wells you must find and write in journals with to be able to save progress.

This can make it a bit more difficult to get to a save point than usual, so if you were glad to be rid of this play style in the modern gaming world, this game is not for you.

This is the perfect little game for those who love classic horror. Although the story wobbles here and there, and the characters could be a tad more likeable, the game itself is an engrossing mystery that will keep you on your toes. This game requires good gaming skills, so if you’re not an expert at the keyboard or gamepad, you may want to warm up with a somewhat easier game first before giving this one a try.
