Very few places on our planet are so by definition horrifying as the abyss-like depths of the sea. After all, if there’s one thing we as humans have a natural fear of is the unknown, and the majority of the depths are still even today completely unknown. It’s a place submerged in complete darkness, as the light of the sun simply can’t reach so deep in the ocean. Silt promises to take us to the depths of the ocean to shed some light on the dark unknown. But, aside from taking place in the depths, what's going on in Silt? well, let's talk about it!
About the game
Silt is a game developed by Spiral Circus, and what this game has going on got us hooked from the first look. puts us in the shoes of a diver who must solve a mystery that has long been submerged in the dark waters. To help us in our task we will be able to control sea creatures to solve the problems that arise.
Especially puzzles related to the environment or areas full of deadly obstacles. According to the developers themselves, the idea is to "bring surreal art to life in games". The adventure and puzzle title will take us on a journey of survival among leviathans and other threats in a hostile environment.
This surreal underwater puzzle-adventure game shows us a world where nature has transformed most bizarrely. We get to discover new organisms, explore ancient ruins of unknown civilizations, and find out what lies behind some of the darkest secrets in the dark of the depths.
Of course, it's not all about solving puzzles, you'll also have to survive numerous encounters with de giant deep-sea goliaths. Find a way to survive these encounters and also use take advantage of them to get to the center of the abyss.
An unsettling artistic experience
It's undeniable that a good art direction can take a game really far, and in Silt, it's right there in the spotlight of the game. It feels as if you're playing an underwater version of Limbo, and using artistic gameplay like Abzu.
The game uses a similar aesthetic to Limbo: black backgrounds with white lines and textures that give the feeling of being immersed in the underworld. And while the environments are very minimalistic in design, they manage to feel both realistic and surreal at the same time.
Although the focus is on exploration, the main objective isn't to make progress through levels but rather to find objects necessary to solve puzzles. However, Silt is more than just a simple exploration game, because we'll have to fight enemies, solve environmental puzzles, and overcome obstacles, just like in Limbo.
Silt is an unsettling yet beautiful experience. Who would've thought that being lost in the center of the underwater abyss, surrounded by such horrifying creatures, could turn out to be such a beautiful game? Each level is filled with surprises that will make your blood boil and keep you on the edge of your seat. This is not the kind of game you'll want to play every day - it's too disturbing for that - but it's definitely worth playing once in a while to get your adrenaline pumping.
