FPS games have been rather straightforward ever since they entered the gaming sphere. Point here, shoot there, take cover here. It’s all become predictable and formulaic. Sure, the setting or the story may change from game to game, but mechanically, it’s all very much the same. Well, that was until Superhot came to be in 2016. This game would aim to give FPS players something completely new, combining puzzle and FPS gameplay to offer one of the most unique gaming experiences to date.
This game plays similarly to other FPS titles such as Call of Duty and Medal of Honor in some respects. However, we would say that it is closer to games such as Portal, My friend Pedro, Beat Saber and The Talos Principle. This game aims to show FPS fans that there is more to FPS games than mindless shooting and violence. However, does it galvanise the genre or fail to innovate? We find out in our review of Superhot.
Every Move Counts
The core gameplay of Superhot boils down to a level-based shooter where you must eliminate every enemy in the room to proceed. Whilst they all try to cut you down to size. One hit will see you fail the level but this goes equally for your enemies. So this is a hard-core shooter based on quick reflexes, awareness of your surroundings and precision above all else. So far, not all that different from other FPS games. But wait, what about the fact that time only moves when you do? That’s right, you can stop at any point in time and analyse surroundings, see bullet decals flying through the air and adjust accordingly. This leads to players facing tasks that in real time would be near impossible, but with the aid of this time-bending power, players can perform incredible feats and thanks to this, the game becomes more akin to a puzzle game than a straightforward shooter.
That being said though, there is never a set method for success. Players can approach each level as they see fit and experiment with the sandbox like environment. You may find a knife to throw at an enemy, you may find a stray gun and use that.
Or alternatively, you might throw the knife, kill the enemy, grab their gun in mid-air and shoot the remaining enemies all in one swift motion. Honestly, this is the closest you will ever get to feeling like John Wick and we are here for it.
Overall, Superhot is a unique gaming experience that should not be missed. It takes a beloved gaming genre and twists it to offer something completely foreign and fantastic.
The minimalist design is superb, the gameplay is tight mechanically, the levels are all meticulously crafted and holistically, this game is one of the most complete and captivating FPS games ever made. If you managed to miss this one, be sure to get yourself acquainted as soon as you can.
