The Italian game studio 505 Games has been delivering incredible games since 2006, and now they came up with their latest: Among the Trolls. This title is in charge of the Finnish Forbidden Studios, who debut with a first-person adventure focused on survival and Finnish folklore. The game was presented in society a couple of years ago, and it may sound like more of the same, due to the current popularity of a genre that seems perfect for streaming. But here there seems to be some effort to wrap the proposal with a story that, according to its developers, will have more prominence than expected. So, what’s this game all about? Let’s talk about it!

About the game

The survival genre is in luck with Among the Trolls, the debut of Forbidden Studios. In this survival adventure, we will play the role of Alex or Anna, who travel to Finland to visit their grandparents in a cabin in the shelter of the forest. However, the mystery is unleashed when we find ourselves dragged into a magical world where Finnish mythology converges with the memories of our childhood. Our mission will be to survive while we find the whereabouts of our grandparents.

What makes this a special game is that in addition to the gathering, tool-making, and resource-building phases, there is also the spiritual side to keep an eye on.

By this, we mean that we will have to carry out a series of rituals, offerings, and sacrifices to appease the spirits of the forest (trolls, of course, and many more creatures). As we take resources, the scenery will become darker and more dangerous, and rituals will be the only way to make it a "bright" place again.

These rituals are based on the shamanistic culture of Finland, known as Tietäjä, and offer a very faithful vision of popular beliefs.

A nice twist

The studio intends to shake up the dynamics and mechanics of survival role-playing with a plot that will revolve around the protagonist's roots, her connection with the shamanic and ancestral magic of the forest, and, of course, with the trolls that inhabit it. We will have to build a shelter, in which to settle the base of operations, while we discover the magical attributes that awaken when in contact with nature: Sisu (Courage), Väki (Magic), and Lykky (Luck). Some skills that will be key to integrating into the environment, and that will mark our relationship with the fauna and flora of the place.

Among the Trolls is a beautiful game that goes deep into the Finnish folklore, and represents it in a way that makes it really come to life. The visuals are great, and the gameplay is really solid. Magic, mystery, a lot of crafting and a mystery to be solved as the engine of progress. The proposal, at least, seems to move away from the canons established by a formula that does not stop delivering clones year after year.
