Did you love playing with toys growing up? If so, then this is a game for you. Jump into the world of Disney and enter into a Manhattan threatened by Loki, who appears to refuse to learn a lesson, and Modok to save it from being frozen over by the ice giants; looks like the work is never done in Disney Infinity 2.0: Marvel Super Heroes.
Story and gameplay
So there are a few game modes in this title and the story mode is one of the ones worth mentioning. You play your way through the campaign with the Avengers completing pretty simple tasks. The formula falls down to ‘travel to one place and beat up waves of ice giants before moving to another place’ and repeating that for 5 hours.
Travelling around Manhattan is fun and the multiple ways you can do so provides a nice amount of variety and the destructible environment also adds a great deal to the gameplay.
Speaking of the gameplay, there’s been a few upgrades from the previous title in the franchise. With characters receiving a bit more in the way of individual depth as their skills and moves differ more so than ever, they also received the much needed ‘skill tree’ upgrade system that games these days love so much.
Toy Box Mode
This is definitely where Disney infinity shines. This allows the player to go into a new empty world and create whatever they desire. I know that seems like a lot and that’s good because it is. Want to design a race with some dope jumps? Want to create a parkour gauntlet with swinging hammers and steep drops? Want to create a city for you to fight waves of enemies in? All of it; you can do all of it. All the collectibles and toys you got throughout the game, they are all accessible here and you are free to use the system to create anything you desire. There is a lot of unique gameplay in here.
You get hyper realistic art styles in games as often as you get gosh darn awful art styles. Character designs and art direction vary as much as plots do but this is one of the occasions where they have gone through the effort to make a redesign, they could have gone realistic like they did in Marvel’s Avengers, which provided similar play style with combat and traversal but opted for a more lifelike direction.
Instead they went for something you could easily see in a Marvel cartoon and I’ll be honest, it works. Of course this games main consumer demographic is those in younger years but the charming caricatures this offers instead work really quite well and endear the player to the “playing with toys” atmosphere they want to present.
This is a cute and fun romp through a simple Avengers game. The Toy Box mode is where it’s at so if you want to explore and have fun designing then this is a sure fire good time.
- Adorable Art style
- Toy Box Mode is clever and unique
- Story mode lacks mission variety
